Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person's muscles and joints.

Osteopathy is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together.

Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and massage with the aim of:

  • increasing the mobility of joints

  • relieving muscle tension

  • reducing pain

  • enhancing the blood supply to tissues

  • helping the body to heal

Osteopathy for Children and Babies

It is a common belief that babies and children should have no stresses or strains in their bodies because they are so young. The reality is very different.

We treat newborns and babies, through to toddlers and older children, applying cranial osteopathic techniques.

Although gentle, cranial osteopathic treatment is extremely effective and may be used to help relieve symptoms in a wide range of conditions, leaving your little one soothed, relaxed and happy.

                 For Babies

During birth, the baby is subjected to enormous forces, as the uterus pushes to expel the baby against the natural resistance of the birth canal. The baby has to turn and twist as it squeezes through the bony pelvis, on its short but highly stimulating journey.Stresses and strains from the labour or pregnancy can lead to unsettled behaviour and difficulties with feeding, winding, bowel movements and sleep. While the body is naturally gifted to cope with the delivery journey, some of the newborns retain some minor strain that might make them uncomfortable and therefore unsettled. As they grown, they could suffer from a variety of symptoms.Relieving any physical strains with gentle osteopathic treatment can be very helpful and relaxing. The care of the entire family unit is of the utmost concern for an osteopath. An osteopathic check-up following the birth can also help pinpoint potential problems and helps to ease the dramatic transition from life inside the womb to the outside world.  This initial adjustment involves many bodily systems such as breathing and digestion.

                   For Children

After birth, there is still much growth and development yet to occur. This is a time when children learn to crawl, walk, run and communicate and are keen to explore their environment and to interact socially. It is desirable to monitor the progress of these early developmental milestones and to address the effects of any major physical mishaps or developmental lag to prevent problems developing in future.Osteopathy is concerned with the arrangements of the parts of the body and their movements. The task of the osteopath is to understand what has gone wrong and why and to use his or her hands to allow the organism to overcome its malfunction. Mechanical disorders have a profound effect on the functioning of all body systems and are important not only in the case of spinal and limb pains.Cranial osteopaths can identify those dysfunctions and help your little ones find a healthier balance and be happier. In each case, our goal is to allow each child to reach their optimum potential, whatever his/her condition.

 WHAT IS CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY?

Cranial osteopathy is safe, gentle and non-manipulative. It encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body. In particular, it can help correct the aches and pains that newborns and young ones might struggle to tell you about.

What conditions will cranial osteopathic treatments help with?

Cranial osteopathy treats the whole body and helps to improve many different symptoms. For babies and young children, cranial osteopathic treatments can help relieve the symptoms of common conditions and special needs. If you would like to find out more, please contact us.

 How does cranial osteopathy work?

Cranial osteopaths have a highly developed sense of touch and are able to feel subtle changes of tension and tissue quality. These are most apparent in the cranial bones in the head. This enables the diagnosis of areas of strain or dysfunction. Then, using cranial osteopathic techniques, we gently release those tensions and restore the whole body’s natural rhythm and balance.

Is cranial osteopathy safe for babies?

Yes, when performed by a well-trained and qualified pediatric osteopath. All osteopaths are required by UK law to be registered and regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. We will always ensure that patients and their babies and children seek appropriate medical advice and treatment alongside any osteopathic treatment, and will refer patients back to their GP if a problem is not suitable for osteopathic treatment.

â€‹How will cranial osteopathy help my baby?

This gentle treatment will help soothe and relax your baby, relieving overall discomfort and symptoms so that your baby’s natural healing mechanisms are restored. And when your baby is relaxed and happy, we are positive you will be too.
